COSECHA

Competition entry, 2023 / Logroño, Spain

Our proposal for the 10th Concéntrico Festival aims to highlight the raw material used in the production of phenolic plywood panels, the material selected by the competition guidelines as the primary resource. For this reason, following an analysis of the production process of the panels, the intervention is conceived as a hiatus within it. “Cosecha” (Harvest in spanish) proposes a strategic deviation from the conventional path of the raw material, introducing a pause in the process and, in doing so, making it visible.

We propose the poplar log as the central piece of the intervention, recognizing its fundamental role as a landscape element, revaluing the long-standing tradition of poplar plantations in the region, and symbolizing the need for responsible architectural practices. The main part of the log forms the pavilion, while its remnants define the urban furniture, serving as key components both aesthetically and conceptually.

Instead of being taken directly to the factory after harvest, the logs will be temporarily transported to the proposed pavilion site. They will be arranged vertically, grouped in a circle. The space will be defined by a progressive displacement of the logs from the center upward. This configuration seeks to highlight the raw material by exhibiting it in its unprocessed state. Additionally, a support system is established by binding the logs together with straps, preventing any alteration or structural compromise. Thus, at the end of the festival, they can be reintegrated into their production chain.

This results in a sculptural composition that connects a pre-industrial construction element—the log in its raw state—with an industrial component—the technical precision of ratchet straps. This interplay creates a tension between the archaic expression of the material and the contemporary, counterintuitive way in which it is assembled.
