HORROR VACUI

First prize, 2020 / Sapa, Vietnam

The fundamental strategy is as ancient as the very will to create a habitable space. First, a platform is defined, resting upon the landscape. Above it, a regular grid of columns is positioned to support the roof, providing shelter from the elements. This arrangement suggests a space that extends outward, merging with the exterior. At its core, a square-shaped nucleus addresses the essential needs of any dwelling. By concentrating the services in a single unit, the rest of the platform stays open. The unoccupied space is filled with a sea of ropes, forming a malleable mass that serves as both a dense filter and a material open to interaction. The act of displacing the ropes corresponds to the intention of shaping spaces. By simply tying them to a column, their absence gradually defines the desired enclosures. The interior becomes infinitely reconfigurable.

The stone marks the entrance. Crossing the threshold, those who venture into the refuge leave behind nationality, religion, class, and ideology. They will gradually immerse themselves in a homogeneous space—one without hierarchies or references, a place of pure experience, a platform that patiently awaits the chance for a serendipitous encounter. Inside, people will move forward cautiously toward the goal we all share: finding a place that offers us shelter.
